Description

Throughout the Winter season, black bears go through a form of hibernation known as torpor. During this time, the bear’s metabolism slows down, its body temperature slightly decreases, and its heart rate slows down dramatically. Sometimes during winter, especially if it’s mild enough, a black bear will wake up from its torpor and will forage or take care of its cubs.

In this piece, The Black Bear Awakens, we discover what a black bear experiences when it comes out of its deep resting state. Snow is still falling in the beginning as the bear awakens as it slowly gathers its bearings. Soon, it looks for its companion as we hear the folk song “Black is the Color of my True Love’s Hair.” The bear then has to protect its family from predators before it can return to its slumber as spring slowly approaches.
